Tekeoğulları

Tekeoğulları

The Tekeoğulları were an Anatolian beylik that emerged as a branch of the Hamidoğulları dynasty. They ruled over the southern part of the Hamadogullar Beilik on the Mediterranean coast in the Antalya region.

History

At the end of the 14th century, the Tekeoğulları began to be referred to as a distinct entity, with their territory being called the "Teke beilik" or "Tekeogullary beilik". However, historical research has shown that they were simply a branch of the Hamidoğullars that ruled in the Beylik part. This was confirmed by inscriptions on buildings and compositions of modern events by Mamluk historians.

The Tekeoğulları dynasty is believed to have emerged from a sideline of the Hamidoğulları, with their rule over Antalya dating back to 1321. However, they faced disputes with the Kingdom of Cyprus, and in 1361, Peter I was able to conquer Antalya. The city was not recaptured by the Tekeoğulları until 1373 under Mubârizuddin Mehmed Bey.

Conquest and Decline

In 1391, the beylik was conquered by Bayezid I, but after his defeat at the hands of Timur Lenk, Timur restored the beylik. However, in 1423, the Beylik was finally conquered by the Ottomans.

Legacy

The Yivli Minare Mosque was built in Antalya after the Tekeoğulları recaptured the city in 1373. The mosque remains a notable landmark in the region to this day.
