Tel Dor
Dor (Ancient City)
Location and Geography
Dor (Hebrew: דאר or דור; Assyrian: du'ru, Greek: Dora; ancient Egyptian: Der, Tar, Tir, Tuiar) was an ancient city located on the Mediterranean Sea in the territory of present-day Israel. It is situated approximately 30 kilometers south of Haifa on the Carmel coast.
Archaeological Site
The archaeological site of Tel Dor (Hebrew: h. tell, or ruin, of the tower) is located next to the modern moshav of Dor, about 30 kilometers south of Haifa and 2.5 kilometers west of Hadera. The site is situated on a small promontory on the north side of a protected inlet.
History
Dor is mentioned in various ancient sources, including Egyptian travelogues and Greek literature. The identification of Tel Dor with the biblical city of Dor (also known as Darhar) is based on archaeological findings and historical records. The site is believed to have been an important trading point due to its natural harbor, which allowed for the construction of multiple ports.
Description
The archaeological site covers an area of approximately 70 hectares, stretching from the northwest to the Kibbutz. The site features three breaches in the south wall, with a long field and three small islands creating a lagoon-like structure. This natural formation would have enabled the city's residents to build multiple ports and possibly even check for ships.
Significance
The identification of Tel Dor with the ancient city of Dor is supported by Greek and athletic sources (such as Uzzibius) as well as the Ptolemaic map surrounding the city. The site's strategic location on the Mediterranean coast made it an important trading point in antiquity.
