Territorial Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Cava de' Tirreni
--- CONTENT--
Territorial Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Cava de' Tirreni (Latin: Abbatia Territorialis Sanctissimae Trinitatis Cavensis) is a seat of the Catholic Church in Italy suffragan of the archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno belonging to the ecclesiastical region Campania. In 2021 it counted 20 baptized on 20 inhabitants. It is ruled by Abbot Michele Petruzzelli, O.S.B.
Territory
The ecclesiastical constituency includes the only abbey, which also constitutes the only parish. The sanctuary of Maria Santissima Avvocata over Maiori also falls under the jurisdiction of the territorial abbey.
The abbey is located on a hill, about 400 meters above sea level, 3 km from the center of the town of Cava de' Tirreni and a short distance from the Amalfi coast and the agro walnut.
The territorial abbey also had jurisdiction over the surrounding territory, that on 20 August 2012, under a decree of the Congregation for Bishops that it had run on 19 January 2013, was assigned to the Archdiocese of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni, which thus acquired the parishes of the hamlets of Cava and San Cesareo, in the municipality of Cava de' Tirreni, and of Dragonea in the municipality of Vietri sul Mare. These same three parishes were already part of the diocese of Cava de' Tirreni until 1979, when, by a decree of the same Congregation, they had been ceded to the abbey.
College and School
In 1867 the San Benedetto College and schools were established. It began with classical high school, drawn to government schools in 1894. Over the years, the scientific high school, the lower grades and the last grades of elementary school followed.
In addition to colleges, schools were open to semi-convictors (students who have lunch and stay to study in the afternoon in local specials with the help of professors) and outside (only schools apply). Since 1985 the attendance at schools has also been open to students.
The college and schools suffered the crisis of the Italian Catholic school and so, after almost a century and a half of history, in 1992 the elementary school was closed, then in 1994 the middle school, in 2002 the college was closed, the classical high school in 2003. Last but not least, the scientific high school was closed in 2005.
Cultural heritage
Artworks
During the centuries of its history, the abbey has enriched itself with many works of art of different eras: buildings, frescoes, mosaics, sarcophagi, sculptures, paintings, miniature codes and precious objects. In particular:
the basilica, built in the 11th century by the abbot Saint Peter Pappacarbone and consecrated by Pope Urban II on 5 September 1092, was completely rebuilt in the eighteenth century by Giovanni del Gaizo. The twelfth century cosmos and the chapel of the Holy Fathers, restored and covered with polychrome marbles in 1641, remain of the ancient basilica.
