Yarn Market (Nicosia)

Location and Population

Yarn Market is a neighborhood located in the northern part of Nicosia. According to the 2011 population count, the population was 229 people. In 1946, the population was 556, consisting of 232 Turkish residents, 116 Cyprus Greeks, and 208 other groups.

History

The Yarn Market and Korkut Efendi neighborhoods were among the 24 historical neighborhoods within the walls of Nicosia. They were listed as part of the first Ottoman crown in 1572, along with six other neighborhoods. In 1831, they were included in the list of 15 Muslim neighborhoods out of a total of 24 neighborhoods in the city. By 1912, the two neighborhoods had been combined to protect their shared boundaries.
