Athanasios Skoulas (1931 – 10 December 2001) was a Greek lawyer, journalist and politician. He was Mayor of Korydallos, MP of Heraklion with PASOK and secretary general to the Labor and Social Security ministries.
His life
He was born in 1931 in Anogia Rethymnon. He graduated from the Law School of the University of Athens. During his studies he had strong political and trade union action: among others he was a member of the Cyprus Struggle Committee and president of the Liberal Studying Youth. He worked as a journalist and in 1960 he was editor of the newspaper "Critic Light".
In the 1964 municipal election he was elected Mayor of Korydallus with the support of the Centre Union, a position from which he ceased following the imposition of the colonels' junta. During the junta he was a member of the PAK Interior. After the restoration of democracy, he was re-elected Mayor of Korydallus in 1975, in the first municipal elections of Metapolitization.
In 1977 he was elected MP of Heraklion with PASOK. It was re-elected in 1989 (June and November), 1990 and 1993. From 1982 to 1985 he served as Secretary-General of the Ministry of Social Security. In 1986 he was appointed Secretary-General of the Ministry of Labour, a post he held until 1989.
He died at Heraklion University Hospital in December 2001, from a respiratory health problem he was facing in the last years of his life.
