Thassos Michailidis was born in Athenou on 10 February 1944. He speaks, beyond Greek, English, Czech and German. He studied engineering at Prague Technical University obtaining a degree and a master's degree.

He has worked as a private employee, as a lecturer in Engineering at the Higher Institute of Technology (1975–1977) and as an engineering instructor at the Ministry of Education and Culture (1977–1991). In 2006 he was appointed chairman of the board of directors of the State Scholarships Foundation.

He is married to Maria Hapisi and has two daughters and a son.

He was a member of the Cyprus Technical Education Officers Organisation (OLTEK) serving in various positions at the Larnaca-Ammochostos Provincial Office. In addition, he served as secretary and chairman of the Provincial Committee of Larnaca of Progressive Movement of Teachers of Middle and Technical Education. He also served as a member of the board of directors of the American Academy of Larnaca, the Association of Scientist Engineers, the Association of Cyprus Engineers and the Scientific Technical Chamber of Cyprus.

He was a member of the AKEL Larnaca Provincial Committee and the party's Central Committee.

In the 1991 parliamentary election he was elected MP in the Larnaca Electoral District with AKEL for the Sixth Parliamentary Period. He was re-elected in the 1996 parliamentary elections for the VII Parliamentary Period and the 2001 parliamentary elections for the VIII Parliamentary Period. He did not claim re-election in the 2006 parliamentary elections due to the Rules of Procedure of the AKEL which did not allow more than three terms for each Member.

As Member of Parliament, he served as Secretary of the House, member of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, member of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Works and member of the Parliamentary Committee on Health. In addition, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
