Events
* 255 AH - The Abbasid Caliph Abu Abdullah Muhammad al-Mu'tazz was deposed and imprisoned in one of the dark cells until he died of hunger and thirst.
* 583 AH - Al-Nasir Salah ad-Din Ayubi recaptured Jerusalem after 91 years of Crusader control.
* 848 AH - Ottoman Sultan Murad II defeated King Ladislas of Hungary at the Battle of Varna, capturing around 80,000 Hungarian soldiers and killing Ladislas. The Ottomans lost only 150 men.
* 1247 AH - The island of Cyprus separated from the Ottoman Empire in exchange for an annual payment to the Ottomans.
* 1286 AH - The Khedivial Opera House was opened in Egypt.
* 1287 AH - The Cremieux Decree was issued, granting French citizenship to Jews in Algeria and allowing European settlement in the country.
* 1340 AH - The Allies reviewed some of the terms of the Treaty of Sèvres, which had forced the Ottoman Empire to accept after its defeat in World War I. They tried to reach a settlement between Turks and Greeks, but the Turks refused to accept a ceasefire until the Greeks withdrew from Anatolia.
* 1342 AH - The Islamic Caliphate officially ended with the deposition of Ottoman Sultan Abd al-Majid II and his exile, along with all members of his family, by Mustafa Kemal.
* 1361 AH - British colonial forces in India arrested Mahatma Gandhi after he launched a non-violent resistance movement against British rule.
* 1362 AH - Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Pasha al-Nahhas began negotiations with several independent Arab countries to discuss the terms for achieving Arab unity, which led to the establishment of the League of Arab States (now known as the Arab League).
* 1366 AH - The British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act and the Partition of India Act, granting the princely states and provinces the option to join either India or Pakistan.
* 1370 AH - Jordan's legislative councils were dissolved by royal decree due to opposition from the Senate to the general budget.
* 1375 AH - The United Kingdom exiled Cypriot leader Makarios III to the Seychelles.
* 1377 AH - The Iraqi and Jordanian parliaments approved an agreement between King Faisal II of Iraq and King Hussein of Jordan to establish a union between the two countries under the name "Arab Union".
* 1392 AH - Palestinian members of the Black September organization attacked the Israeli delegation participating in the Munich Olympics, killing 11 Israeli athletes. This event is known as Operation Munich.
* 1410 AH - UN Special Envoy Johannes Manner visited Western Sahara to assess the situation in the region.
* 1413 AH - A secret meeting was held between Ahmed Qurei, head of the Economic Department at the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), and Israeli researcher Ya'ir Hirschfeld in Norway as part of a series of secret meetings that led to the signing of the Oslo Accords.
* 1426 AH - Over 1,000 people drowned when a bridge collapsed in Iraq due to overcrowding.
* 1429 AH - A Turkish court ruled against dissolving the Justice and Development Party (AKP) after it had been accused of violating the constitution.
