#### Roman Empire
* Emperor Honorius ordered the closure of the gladiator school in Rome and put an end to gladiatorial fighting.
* Consuls Eutropius and Flavius Mallius Theodore were in power.
* Pope Anastasius I reigned from 399 to 401.
#### Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire)
* The Gothic leader Gainas became a magister militum in the East and declared himself regent, taking control of Constantinople.
* Eutropius threatened Empress Eudoxia with exile. He was later deprived of honors by Arkady, exiled to Cyprus, and eventually convicted and executed.

* March 19: Counts Gaudentius and Jovius ordered the destruction of pagan temples and statues in Carthage.
* Spring: revolt of the auxiliaries of the goth Tribigild in Nacoleia in Phrygia. Chief Gaïnas and General Leon were sent against him, but Tribigild managed to escape and defeat Leon.
#### Other Events
* Elia Pulcheria was born (453).
* Guyne's rebellion in Asia was put down by Arkady near Chalcedon.
* Guyna received the title of chief military commander and filled Constantinople with his troops.
