- CONTENT--
Ioannis Emmanuel (1774, Ottoman Empire – , ), and Panagiotis Emmanuel (, 1776, Kastoria – 12 June 1798, Belgrade), together the Brothers Emmanuel – two of the “eight great martyrs of Greek freedom”, members of the revolutionary organization of Rigas Fereos.

Biography
Ioannis was born in Kastoria, West Macedonia in 1774. He studied medicine in Vienna. "" His brother Panagiotis was two years younger and worked as an accountant in the trading house of Rigas's revolutionary organization employee, Eustratius Argentis. Ioannis Emmanuel contacted Rigas and was involved in his plans for the liberation of the Hellenes.

He was sent by Rigas to Macedonia to prepare an uprising.

Upon his return to Vienna, he was captured by Austrian police, along with his brother, Rigas, and other 15 Greek revolutionaries, "mostly from the Greeks of Macedonia." Eight of them, being Ottoman subjects, were handed over to the Turkish authorities in Belgrade. The Austrians hoped to replace the Polish revolutionaries who had fled to Ottoman territory. Greek revolutionaries were imprisoned in the Belgrade fortress of Nebojsa and strangled on June 12, 1798. The bodies were thrown into the Sava River.

Before his death, Rigas said, “I have sown enough seeds.” The hour will come, the sprouts will rise and the Rod will harvest.
