The First War of Football and Other Wars of the Poor
--- CONTENT--
The first war of football and other wars of the poor (original title Wojna Futbolowa) is a book by Polish reporter Ryszard Kapuściński.
The book
The book was born from a collection of journalist's writings, a war envoy for the newspaper Polityka and the press agency Polska Agencja Prasowa (PAP), both operating in his country.
The author gathers his experiences from the 1960s to 1976: sixteen years between Ghana and the Congo, Tanganyika, South Africa of Afrikaner, Algeria, Nigeria, Chile, Honduras and El Salvador. And again the stories of the war between Syria and Israel and the Turkish occupation of the island of Cyprus.
The title of the book refers to the "Guerra del Football", the very short conflict fought in 1969 between Honduras and Salvador, also known as "Guerra del calcio" (or "Guerra delle Cent ore") as it took the steps in conjunction with the series of meetings valid for the qualification to the 1970 World Cup in Mexico between the nationals of Honduras and El Salvador.
The journalist narrates peoples in war and his precarious condition of Polish envoy in foreign territory. Important portraits that Kapuściński makes of some African leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba and Ben Bella.
Issues
The book was published in the original language in 1978. The first publication in Italy took place in 1990. Feltrinelli published it for the first time in 2002, in the "I Narratori" series.
