Missolonghi

================

Missolonghi (Greek: Μισολόγγχι, Misolóngchi) is a town and municipality located on the north bank of the Gulf of Patras in Western Greece. It has a total area of 680.4 km2 and a population of 34,416 as of 2011.

History

Missolonghi was founded in 2011 with the merger of three former municipalities as part of the local government reform. The municipality is divided into several villages, including Ayos Yeoryos, Ayos Tomas, Ano Kuduni, Elinika, Evinohori, Misolonki, Musura, and Retsina.

Significance

Missolonghi gained international recognition during the Greek War of Independence in 1826. The town was besieged by Ottoman forces, but its defenders, including Lord Byron, a British philhellene, fought bravely to defend it. Although the siege was unsuccessful, the bravery and sacrifice of the defenders have made Missolonghi a symbol of Greek resistance.

Memorials and Landmarks

The town is home to several memorials and landmarks that commemorate its history. The "Hero Garden" is a vast park dedicated to the Greek defenders and philhellenes who fell during the sieges. A central tumulus honors anonymous fighters, while the tomb of Márkos Bótzaris, designed by French sculptor David d'Angers, stands nearby. Lord Byron's monument is also located in the town.
