Kontemenos
Kontemenos (Greek: Κοντεμένος) is a village located in the Kyrenia District of Cyprus, 7 km northwest of Skylloura.
History
After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the village came under de facto control of Northern Cyprus. Prior to this event, Kontemenos was inhabited exclusively by Greek Cypriots. The village's name has undergone changes over time; until 1974, the Turkish Cypriots referred to it as Kördemen or Kördümen, meaning "blind war". In 1975, the Turkish Cypriots renamed it Kılıçarslan in honor of a Turkish soldier (Seçim Kılıçarslan) killed during the 1974 Turkish military offensive near the village.
Geography
The village is situated on the road connecting Nicosia to Myrtou/Çamlıbel. According to physical geography, Kontemenos is located seven kilometers northwest of Skylloura/Yılmazköy.
Demographics
According to the 2011 census conducted by the Statistical Service of Northern Cyprus, the village has a population of 194 inhabitants. In the past, the village's demographics have been predominantly Christian; in the 1891 British census, Christians constituted the only inhabitants of Kontemenos. A few Muslim inhabitants were recorded in the 1931 census.
Administrative Status
De jure, Kontemenos belongs to the Kyrenia District of the Republic of Cyprus, while de facto it is under the control of Northern Cyprus and part of the Girne district.
