History
Origins and early conflicts
The unit was officially established in Toronto, Ontario, as The 10th Battlaion Volunteer Militia Rifles, Canada (literally "The Volunteer Militia rifle battalion, Canada"), but in fact it existed since then and was based at the Mechanics Institute. Thanks to the initiative of Frederic Cumberland, an engineer and architect who designed the St. James' Cathedral in Toronto, the unit was set up. He was the first battalion commander and held this position until 1865.
The battalion was renamed "The 10th Battalion Volunteer Milita (Infantry), Canada" ("The Volunteer Militia Battalion (Infantry), Canada"
