"The Special Forces of Greece"
- CONTENT -
The special forces of Greece are elite units of all the armed forces and security forces of Greece, organized in the framework of the Special Forces Command (in short in Greek: ΔΔΕΕ, in English: JSOC). The command is directly subordinate to the Chief General Staff of National Defence.
background
In 2013, the General Staff proposed to establish the Joint Special Forces Command, but politics and rivalry between the offices prevented its operations. In July 2020, after years of conflict and skepticism, the Greek government decided to establish the new command.
The new government decision is intended to address NATO requirements:
Join the EU’s structured and permanent cooperation project.
To establish the Special Forces Command which is incorporated until 2024.
Establish three separate special operations commanders, one for each arm: a group of land special operations – SOLTG, a naval special operations group – SOMTG, and a special air operations group – SOATG. By 2025, all of these commanders will operate under NATO and the EU, and will be separate from the forces under the command of the Greek Special Forces (JSOC).
