Early Life and Immigration
Corinna Bercu was born on September 22, 1935, in Tecuci, Romania, to Lazar and Dorina Bercu. Her childhood and primary school education took place during the Holocaust, a period that would later become a significant theme in her writing.
In July 1948, at the age of 13, Corinna immigrated with her parents to Israel, which had been established as a state just six months prior. The family spent six months in British internment camps in Cyprus before settling in Tel Aviv.
Education and Career
Corinna's education continued in Israel, where she attended high school for two years. After completing her studies, she joined the youth league Haschomer Hazair, which was a significant part of her formative years.
In 1950, Corinna began working at Sifriat Poalim, a local publishing house in Tel Aviv, where she received guidance and mentorship from Avraham Levinsky. Her experience in the publishing industry would later influence her writing career.
Writing Career
Corinna Hasofferett is an Israeli writer who has published numerous books in Hebrew. However, her works are often translated into other languages under the name Corinna Hasofferett ("Corinna, the writer").
Her ninth book, a historical-literary autobiography, was written from 2008 to 2018 and explores her childhood, primary school education during the Holocaust, and the life of the Jewish community in Romania. This work is a testament to her dedication to preserving the history of her people.
Personal Life
Corinna Hasofferett passed away on November 30, 2022, at the age of 87. Throughout her life, she maintained a strong connection to her heritage and community, which is reflected in her writing.
