THE SHIP ANTOINE DROWNED NEAR THE PORT OF ASHDOD ON NOVEMBER 23, 1973. IN DISASTER, THERE WERE 21 PEOPLE.

THE DROWNING
ANTOINE WAS A SHIP IN A VOLUME OF 4,000 TONS. IT WAS BUILT IN GERMANY IN 1954. IT WAS OWNED BY A GREEK COMPANY AND WELCOMED THE FLAG OF CYPRUS.

THE SHIP ARRIVED AT THE SHORES OF ISRAEL IN EARLY OCTOBER AND BROKE A CARGO PORT OF 4,000 TONS OF CEMENT IMPORTED FROM ROMANIA. ON 21 NOVEMBER, THE SHIP REACHED ABOUT A MILE AWAY FROM THE PORT OF ASHDOD, DOCKING AND WAITING IN THE OPEN SEA TO ENTER THE PORT TO LOAD PHOSPHATES.

TYPICALLY, SHIPS WITH THE WIND SPEED REACHED 35 MILES PER HOUR TO SAIL TO THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA, IN ORDER TO GET AWAY FROM THE DANGEROUS SHORES. ON THE NIGHT BETWEEN 22 AND 23 NOVEMBER, A STRONG STORM WAS RAGING. THE WIND SPEED REACHED 70 (OR 90) KM PER HOUR AND THE WAVES REACHED A HEIGHT OF SIX METERS. THE SHIP REMAINED IN PLACE. AS FAR AS THE DISASTER WAS KNOWN, THE ENGINES DID NOT OPERATE AND THERE WAS NO ELECTRIC CURRENT. THEREFORE, THE LIGHTS WERE NOT ACTIVATED AND IT DID NOT HAVE A RADIO CONNECTION WITH THE PORT.

ON FRIDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 23, THE SHIP'S ANCHOR WAS CUT OFF AND IT WAS DRIFTED TOWARD THE PORT'S WAVE BREAKING, HIT IT AND BEGAN SINKING. AT 1:15 PM, NABI HEARD A NIGHT SHIFT AT THE PORT OF THE EXCAVATIONS AND NOTICED THE SHIP WHEN SHE WAS LYING ON THE WAVE BREAKING. A PUPPY OF THE PORT WENT OUT TO THE SHIP AND ELA JOINED OTHER VESSELS FROM THE PORT AND THE NAVY. THE CRUISE SHIP WAS FOUND AWAY FROM THE CRUISE VOUCHER. THE RESCUERS SHOT LIGHTING BOMBS, BUT WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE NOT ALLOWED TO SEND A HELICOPTER TO THE SHIP. THREE SURVIVORS WERE RESCUED, ALL FROM THE WATER. AT 3 P.M., THE SHIP WAS SINKING UNDER THE SEA WHEN THE SHIP’S OFFICERS ARE STILL ABOVE THEM. IN THE NEXT FEW HOURS, THE BEES DISAPPEARED. BREAKS FROM THE SHIP DRIFTED TO THE BEACH.

ON BOARD OF THE SHIP, 24 PEOPLE WERE FOUND – 18 CREW MEMBERS FROM GREECE, TURKEY, PAKISTAN AND SOMALIA, FIVE EMPLOYEES OF AN ISRAELI COMPANY FOR SHIP INSTALLATIONS (WHO WERE ABLE TO HANDLE THE REPAIRS REQUIRED IN THE SHIP) AND A GREEK MARINE INSPECTOR. ONLY THREE SURVIVORS WERE RESCUED. THEY WERE THE GREEK RADIO OFFICER OF THE SHIP, TURKISH SALT AND A 17-YEAR-OLD ISRAELI APPRENTICE FROM THE REPAIR COMPANY.

AFTER THE DROWNING
IN THE FOLLOWING DAYS, SEARCHES WERE CONDUCTED AFTER THE MISSING – THROUGH A PLANE AND BOATS AND ON THE COAST. THE BODIES OF SOME OF THEM FELL OUT OF THE SEA OR WERE FOUND IN IT. ON DECEMBER 4, THERE WERE STILL EIGHT MISSING.

THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT, THE PORT AUTHORITY AND THE ISRAELI POLICE INVESTIGATED THE DISASTER.

IN JANUARY 1974, WORK BEGAN TO REMOVE THE REMAINS OF THE SHIP FROM ITS LOCATION.
