Theocharis Papamargaris (Alexandria, 15 September 1938) is a Greek trade unionist, economist and politician.

Born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt, from Lemnos and Cyprus he studied economics in London, served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance, while teaching at City of London College, University of Athens and Athens College. During the seven years 1967-1974 he developed strong anti-dictatorical action with the resistance organization "Democratic Defence", for which he was imprisoned, while during Metapolitization he was President of the OTOE, a member of the Central Committee of the Coalition of the Left and Progress as an untenable and Minister of Labour, and was also active in the field of NGOs.

Academic – Professional Course

He attended the Tositsaia School of Alexandria (1944-1950) and the Averofius High School of Alexandria (1950-1956).
He conducted undergraduate (BSc Economics) and graduate (MSc Economics) studies in economics specializing in monetary and banking theory at London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London. At the same time, in 1962–63 he worked as a Lecturer at City of London College.
Upon his return to Greece in 1963, he became a Regular Assistant to the Second Chair of Political Economy (1964-1968) at the University of Athens, when the seat was held by Professor Xenophon Zolotas. During 1968-1969 he also taught at Athens College.
He was hired to the Bank of Greece in 1963 and worked as an Economist in the Directorate of Economic Studies until his retirement in 2001 with the rank of Director-Councillor, except in 1969-1974 when he had been imprisoned by the Dictatorship (1969-1972). After his release, he worked in the Greek cement industry “Titan” (1973-1974).
During his imprisonment from Dictatorship, he translated several books into Greek, mainly of which were Paul Samuelson's “Economics” along with Professor Sakis Karagiorga and the “Conceit of Power” by American Senator J. William Fulbright.
In 1994-1997 he was a Member of the Board of Directors of the Inter-operational Association of Industrial and Vocational Education (IVEPE).
He was also a Special Advisor to the Cyprus Development Bank (1995-1996) on Cyprus-Palaistine cooperation issues.

Trade unionism – Political Action

With the imposition of dictatorship in 1967, he joined the resistance organization “Democratic Defence” and, after the arrest of Sakis Karagiorga in July 1969, he is himself arrested and held in the detentions of the New Ionia Police Directorate. This is followed by the trial of the resistance organization (“Test of 35”) and his conviction by the Emergency Court to a five-year prison sentence, which will serve until his release in November 1972. He was successively imprisoned in the Averov, Korydallos, Eptapyrgyri and Corfu Prisons.
