Theotokos Church

Theotokos Church is the name of Orthodox churches and monasteries. “Theotokos” means bearer of God and is an epithet of Mary, which was given to her at the Council of Ephesus in 431.

Churches in Constantinople
The Theotokos was the patron saint of Constantinople. Therefore, churches in Constantinople were named after her, including:

Church of the Theotokos in Blachernenviertel (Baltic district), built in the middle of the 5th century, which housed the mantle of the Blessed Mother. This coat has been worn since the 9th century in a procession around the city when enemy attacks were feared.
