Thoros III of Armenia
Thoros III of Armenia
Life and Reign
Thoros III (Armenian: Թորոս Գ; *1271; † July 23, 1298 in Sis) was king of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia from 1293 to 1295.
### Family Background
He was a member of the Hethumid dynasty and the son of Leon III and Keran (Kir Anna), daughter of Prince Hethum of Lambron. This makes him a part of the family of the Hetumids, who had submitted Cilicia to the Mongols in 1240.
### Reign
In 1293, his brother Hethum II thanked him in his favor and left Thoros the dominion. However, in 1295, Hethum asked to take power again in order to renew the alliance with the Mongol empire of the Ilchane. This led to a brief period of co-rule between the two brothers.
### Marriage
Thoros had been married twice. His first marriage was to Margaret of Lusignan, a daughter of King Hugo III of Cyprus, which took place on January 9, 1288.
### Death
On July 23, 1298, Thoros was strangled in the fortress Partzerpert by Oshin, Marshal of Armenia, on orders from Sempad, who had seized power in the kingdom during Thoros' absence.
