Thutmose III
Thutmose III
Thutmose III, also known as Thutmose the Great, was the sixth pharaoh of the 18th dynasty of Ancient Egypt. He ruled from around 1479 to 1425 BC, and is considered one of the most important and powerful monarchs of the three thousand years of pharaonic civilization.
Early Life and Reign
Thutmose III was born to Thutmose II, a pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, by his concubine Isis. His mother's identity as a concubine rather than a queen is significant, as it highlights the complexities of royal succession in ancient Egypt. After the death of Thutmose II, Thutmose III's stepmother and half-sister, Queen Hatshepsut, took power and ruled the country alone for over 20 years.
Military Campaigns
Thutmose III was interested in the military and made it a well-organized institution, providing it with cavalry and war chariots. During his reign, the ancient Egyptians perfected their skill in archery and javelin-making under his patronage. Unlike Hatshepsut, who followed a policy of peaceful coexistence with Egyptian territories in Palestine and Nubia, as well as with neighboring countries, Thutmose III had to reassert Egyptian control over these regions after her death.
Thutmose launched 16 military campaigns against Asia (Syria and Palestine), successfully establishing Egypt's dominance there. He also secured Egypt's borders with the Nubian kingdom to the south. The ruler of Qadesh in Syria was leading a coalition of Asian princes, but Thutmose III defeated them and established Egyptian control over the region.
Legacy
Thutmose III is considered the founder of the New Kingdom period in Egyptian history. His military campaigns and organizational reforms had a lasting impact on ancient Egypt's power and influence. He is remembered as one of the greatest pharaohs of all time, and his legacy continues to be studied by historians and archaeologists today.
Name and Meaning
The name "Tutmos" (and ) is an ancient Greek pronunciation of the Egyptian name Jehutimesu (), which means "god Thoth is born" (sometimes translated as "born Thoth"). This name reflects the importance of the god Thoth in ancient Egyptian culture, and highlights the pharaoh's connection to the divine.
