Tochni (Greek: Τόχνη, Turkish: Tokhni) is a village located in the Larnaca District of Cyprus, about halfway between the cities of Larnaca and Limassol.

Geography and Population

The village has a population of 424 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census. However, the population has fluctuated over the years due to the events of 1974. Prior to 1974, Tochni had a mixed Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot population.

History

Prior to 1974, the majority of the village's residents were Turkish Cypriots. However, in August 1974, 85 Turkish Cypriot inhabitants of this village and neighboring villages were massacred by Greek Cypriot terrorists. Later that month, the remaining Turkish residents of Tochni were evacuated using coaches and UN military vehicles.

Places of Worship

The village has several places of worship, including:

* The ruins of a Latin church in the centre of the village, overlooking the Orthodox church of St Constantine and Helena.
* A mosque, madrasah, and Muslim burial ground in the eastern part of the village.

Demographics

According to the statistical service of the Republic of Cyprus in 2001, the village has 322 inhabitants. However, this number may not reflect the current population due to the events of 1974.
