Tongue stong (Serapias) is a genus in the family of orchids (Orchidaceae). They are persistent herbaceous tuber geophytes. There are about 15 species and numerous hybrids. They are found in Macaronesia, southern Central Europe and from the Mediterranean to the Caucasus.

Species and subspecies

Serapias athwaghlisia : The species first described in 2015 occurs in Algeria.
Slender tongue stent (Serapias bergonii ): It comes from southern Italy to Turkey in altitudes between 0 and 1000 meters above sea level.
Heart-shaped tongue stent (Serapias cordigera): With the subspecies:
Azores (Serapias cordigera subsp. azorica ): It occurs in the Azores,
Serapias cordigera subsp. cordigera (Syn.: Serapias lorenziana ): It occurs from southern Central Europe to the Mediterranean.
Serapias cordigera subsp. cossyrensis : It occurs only on Pantelleria.
Cretan stent (Serapias cordigera subsp. cretica): It occurs in Crete.
Serapias cordigera subsp. lucana : It occurs in Italy.
Serapias francavillae The species first described in 2009 occurs in Sicily.
Serapias guadinae The species first described in 2017 occurs in Italy.

Serapias maria : The species first described in 2008 occurs in Portugal and Spain.
Neglected tongue stent (Serapias neglecta ): With the subspecies:
Serapias neglecta subsp. apulica : It occurs in southeastern Italy.
Serapias neglecta subsp. neglecta: It occurs in the western and central Mediterranean regions at altitudes between 0 and 600 meters above sea level.
Nurra tongue stent (Serapias nurrica). With subspecies:
Serapias nurrica subsp. argensii : It occurs in southern France.
Serapias nurrica subsp. nurrica: It occurs in the western and central Mediterranean regions at altitudes between 0 and 500 meters, in Sicily even 1000 meters above sea level.
Southern French tongue stent (Serapias olbia): It occurs in southeastern Provence and northern Corsica at altitudes between 0 and 200 meters above sea level.
Oriental tongue stent (Serapias orientalis). With subspecies:
Serapias orientalis subsp. apulica : It occurs in Puglia at altitudes between 0 and 500 meters above sea level.
Serapias orientalis subsp. levantina : It comes from Cyprus and Turkey to Israel in altitudes between 0 and 550 meters above sea level.
Serapias orientalis subsp. orientalis, Syn. Serapias neglecta subsp. ionica: It occurs from the eastern-central and eastern Mediterranean to Transcaucasia.
Sicilian stent (Serapias orientalis subsp. siciliensis ): It occurs in southeastern Sicily at altitudes between 0 and 450 meters above sea level.
Small-blooded tongue stent (Serapias parviflora): It occurs in the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean at altitudes between 0 and 1200 meters above sea level.
