Early Life and Education

Anthony Peter Clement, commonly known as Tony Clement, was born on February 1, 1970, in Manchester, England. He is the son of a Greek Cypriot father and a Jewish mother. At the age of four, he emigrated to Canada with his parents. After his parents' divorce, his mother married John Clement, and Tony adopted his stepfather's surname.

Clement studied political science and law at the University of Toronto. During this period, he developed his interest in politics and was twice elected to the university's Board of Governance. He also served as chair of the Association of Progressive Students.

Career

Involved in both provincial and federal politics, Clement was a member of the House of Commons for the riding of Parry Sound—Muskoka from 2006 to 2019. He held various cabinet positions under Stephen Harper's government:
