Torcello Provincial Museum

Museo Provinciale di Torcello

The Museo Provinciale di Torcello is a museum located on the Venetian island of Torcello in the northern lagoon of Venice. The museum consists of two sections: an archaeological section, housed in the 14th-century Palazzo del Consiglio, and a medieval and early modern section, located in the Palazzo dell'Archivio.

History

The history of the museum dates back to 1870, when Luigi Torelli, the prefect of Venice, acquired the abandoned but well-preserved Palazzo del Consiglio with the intention of housing the previously collected archaeological finds from Torcello. In 1872, Torelli bequeathed the building to the province of Venice, establishing the museum under the direction of Nicolò Battaglini (1812-1887), a renowned historian from Zara (now Zadar).

Collections

The oldest pieces in the museum's collection date back to the Neolithic period. The archaeological section features artifacts from this era, while the medieval and early modern section showcases items from these periods.

Development of the Museum

After Nicolò Battaglini's tenure ended in 1887, Cesare Augusto Levi took over as director. During his time at the museum, Levi continued to collect and gather artifacts from the region, including those acquired during his trips to Rome. In 1887, Levi also purchased the Palazzo dell'Archivio, which became the new home for the medieval and early modern section of the museum.
