Tournoi de France (Women's Football)
Tournoi de France (Women's Football)
The Tournoi de France was an invitational tournament for national teams in women's football hosted by the French Football Federation (FFF). The competition was created in 2020 as part of the package of measures to promote women's football, which had been active since 2011 under the presidency of Noël Le Graët.
History
The first edition of the Tournoi de France took place in spring 2020, bringing together teams from the Netherlands, Canada, Brazil, and the French team. The tournament was held annually until its discontinuation in 2023 due to the introduction of the UEFA League of Women's Nations.
Format
The Tournoi de France was a round-robin tournament featuring four invited teams. Points were awarded in the same manner as other international women's football tournaments, with the team earning the most points declared the winner.
Schedule and Competition
The tournament was typically held in late February or early March, coinciding with several other annual women's football competitions, including the Algarve Cup (established in 1994), the Cyprus Women's Cup (since 2008), the Istria Cup, the Pinatar Cup, the SheBelieves Cup, the Turkish Women's Cup, and the Women's Revelations Cup.
Discontinuation
The Tournoi de France was discontinued from 2024 due to the consolidation of the international schedule by the introduction of the UEFA League of Women's Nations. The tournament had been part of a package of measures aimed at promoting women's football in France, which also included celebrating the 50th anniversary of the official recognition of women's football by the FFF (March 1970).
