The club was founded in 1967 and began competing in the Second League White Group during the 1967-68 season. Over the years, Trabzonspor has established itself as a prominent force in Turkish football, winning the Turkish title six times between 1976 and 1984. This achievement makes it one of two non-Istanbul football clubs to win the Turkish title, alongside Bursaspor.
