Trachoni

Trachoni (Greek: Τραχώνι) is a municipality in the district of Limassol in the Republic of Cyprus. It has a population of 3,952 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census.

Name and Etymology

The name "Trachoni" comes from the ancient Greek word τράχων (trachon), meaning rough and stony ground, as mentioned by Strabon. In Cyprus, there are several places called Trachoni or Trachonas. The Turkish Cypriot inhabitants adopted the alternative name Kaykale in 1958, which means stone fortification.

Location and Environment

Trachoni is located in the south of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus at an altitude of about 30 meters. It lies approximately 8 kilometers southwest of Limassol and borders Tserkezi to the east, Amiandos to the south, Kolossi to the west, and Ypsonas to the north. A significant portion of the municipality's administrative area falls within the territory of the British Akrotiri military base.

History

The settlement is likely of Byzantine origin. Prior to 1974, Trachoni was inhabited by both Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The village can be reached via the road network connecting Limassol with other nearby towns.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, Trachoni has a population of 3,952 inhabitants. In 2001, the village had 3,294 inhabitants, as reported by the statistical service of the Republic of Cyprus.
