Traffic Signs

================

Traffic signs or road signs are signs placed on the side of roads to provide information to those using the road. The use of pictorial signs has become widespread over the past eight decades as the number of vehicles has increased in many countries.

History

-----------

The concept of traffic signs dates back to ancient Rome, where stone columns called "milliaria" were used to guide travelers with information such as destinations, distances, and road names. In modern times, the development of traffic signs accelerated in the late 19th century.

### Early Developments

In 1868, John Peake Knight created the first gas lamp for street lighting. This innovation laid the groundwork for later developments in traffic management. In the early 20th century, car clubs began to form in the United States, and these groups created the first signs to mark their local road sections.

### International Cooperation

The lack of uniformity in traffic signals led to confusion among drivers. To address this issue, the first international convention on cars was held in Paris in 1909. This marked a significant step towards standardizing traffic signs across countries.

Categories

-------------

Traffic signs can be classified into several categories, as defined by the Vienna Convention (1968) Schedule 1:

* Indicate danger or potential hazards

### Priority Signs

* Regulate traffic flow and prioritize certain roads or lanes

### Prohibitive or Restrictive Signs

* Prohibit or restrict certain actions, such as turning or parking

### Mandatory Signs

* Require drivers to take specific actions, such as stopping or yielding

### Special Regulations Signs

* Indicate special regulations or restrictions, such as speed limits or pedestrian crossings

### Information, Facilities, or Service-Related Signs

* Provide information about road conditions, services, or facilities
