Trans man
--- CONTENT ---
Trans man is an umbrella term used to refer to men who were assigned to a female gender at birth and whose gender identity is male. In general, trans men may - or may not - carry out a comprehensive transition process so that their characteristics are consistent with their gender identity, transition that may or may not include hormonal and / or surgical medical treatments to change their anatomical and / or changes in their social and / or legal characteristics, such as the change of name or gender marker in their identity documents.
The terms "transsexual man" and "male transsexual" were sometimes used to refer indistinctly to both transsexual men and transgender men, but it is considered that they should not be used in this way as they are not interchangeable terms and each has its own particularities.
Terminology
Transsexual man
"transsexual man" or "male transsexual" are terms taken from the medical lexicon that refer to a man - assigned to the female sex at birth - who decides to undergo hormonal treatments and / or different surgical procedures to acquire the secondary sexual characteristics associated stereotypically with the male sex, such as the beard, the pronounced adan apple or the severe voice, among others. It is also a term used to designate those who have already been through genital reassignment surgeries or for those who consider the conduct of these surgeries as fundamental within their transition process. The use of the term "trans" is now the most widespread because the use of the term "transsexual" is considered pathologically associated with its past as a term of psychiatric diagnosis.
Transgender man
"Transgender man" is a term that refers to a person - assigned to the female sex at birth - who does not necessarily undergo a medical or surgical transition to fully identify himself as a man despite feeling a dissonance between his gender identity and the sex assigned to him at birth. Not all transgender men have the same idea of what "being a man" means and for this reason everyone feels comfortable at different stages of their transition. This means that not all transgender men want to have genital reassignment surgery, not everyone wants to take hormones.
FTM
The expression FtM (Female to Male, from woman to man) is sometimes used on the Internet as a label to point out content related to trans men. However, the use of this label is problematic because some trans men have expressed that they do not accept this expression by arguing that they have always been male, self-called MtM (Male to Male, or male to male).
