Tremetousia

Overview

Tremetousia (Greek: Τρεμετουσιά [tremetua]; Turkish: Tremeşe or Erdemli) is a village located de iure in the Larnaca district of Cyprus and de facto in the Lefkoşa district of Northern Cyprus. It is one of the four villages of the district under the control of Northern Cyprus (with Arsos, Melouseia, and Pergamo).

Location

The village is situated 7 km east of Athienou, on the north side of the green line.

Tremetousia is located in the south of the Messaria region.

Origins of Name

It is believed that the name Tremetousia derives from the terebinto (tremoiliastos). Until 1974, the Turkish Cypriot name of the village was Tremeşe (Tremeshe). However, in 1975, the Turkish Cypriots adopted the alternative name Erdemli, meaning "virtuous" in Turkish. Erdemli is also a place name in the province of Antalya.

History

The village is located on the site of the ancient city of Tremithus, mentioned by Tolomeo, Ierocle, George of Cyprus, and other ancient geographers. The Emperor Isacco Comneno is believed to have visited the area.

Administrative Status

After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the village became part of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It is currently under the control of the Lefkoşa district.
