Tremitunte

--- CONTENT ---
Tremitunte () is the old name of Tremitousia (pronounced locally / tremetuğ a /; Tremeşe or Erdemli), a village in the district of Lárnaca in Cyprus, 7 kilometres east of Athienou. Today it is one of the four towns in that district that is under the control of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, along with Arsos, Melouseia and Permamos.

In Antiquity it was a city of some importance, cited by Esteban de Byzancio, Ptolomeo, Hierocles, George of Cyprus and others, and in it King Richard of England defeated the usurper Isaac Comneno in 1191, thus completing the cross-occupation of the island of Cyprus. The city would then be destroyed and until today only a small town lives.

The city of Tremitunte was the episcopal seat of Saint Espiridon, which participated in the Council of Nicea (325) and whose cult is very widespread in all the Eastern churches. Tremitunte was also the cradle of the saints Arcadio and Nestor.
