* After the death of his brother Erik I Ejegod on a pilgrimage to Cyprus on July 10, Niels I becomes King of Denmark.
* Emperor Henry IV proclaimed the First Peace of Mainz.
* Magnus III, King of Norway, died in a beach raid in Ireland. His three sons Øystein I, Sigurd I and four-year-old Olaf Magnusson follow him to the throne together.
### Near East
* 19 March: Muhammed is beaten in Khoi, Azerbaijan by his brother the sultan saljûqide Barkyaruq; A peace is signed in which Barkyaruq keeps the title of Sultan and Isfahan, Iraq `Ajami and Fars, while Muhammed gets Azerbaijan, Armenia, Diyarbakır and Mosul. Sanjar keeps the Khorassan and Transoxiane.
* Ridwan's father-in-law, Janah al-Dawla, Emir of Homs, was murdered by the batini in the great mosque of Aleppo during Friday prayers on 19 March.
### Crusades
* May 1: Janah ad-Daula, Emir of Homs, is stabbed by three Persian “Batinites” after Friday prayers for the start of the campaign against the Crusaders leaving the great mosque of Homs in the presence of his astrologer al-Hakim al-Munaddschim. It is the first assassination attempt by this Shiite splinter group, which later becomes known as Assassins.
* The crusaders under King Balduin I of Jerusalem unsuccessfully besieged the Fatimid city of Akkon.
* A generous Armenian prince buys Bohemund of Tarento, prince of Antioch, free after 3 years of Danish-Mendian captivity.

* 10 March: The Dover pact was concluded between King Henry I Beauclerc of England and Count Robert III of Flanders, directed against Robert I Courteheuse, Duke of Normandy.
