Turkey's 1973 General Elections
--- CONTENT ---
The general elections were held in Turkey on 14 October 1973. The result was a victory for the Republican People's Party (CHP), which won a simple majority with 185 seats out of the 450 seats of the Turkish National Assembly. The electoral participation was 66.8 per cent of the electorate.
Because the 185 seats were not enough for the CHP to form this government, it declared itself in coalition with the National Salvation Party, led by Necmettin Erbakan. The controversial government would only last ten months before its fall. In 1974, it would take the important decision to order Turkish military intervention in the Republic of Cyprus, which would leave the country divided into two so far.
