Turkish Arab
--- CONTENT ---
The Turkish Arab () is the breed of horses of the Arab type specific to Turkey. It is one of the two officially recognized horse breeds in this country. The Turkish Arab has spread to Asia and Europe through the conquests of the Ottoman armies.
History
The Turkish Arab race consisted of crosses between the local mares of Turkey, known as Anatolian, and Arab horses of various origins. The Ottoman conquests led to the dissemination of Turkish Arab horses in many places in Europe and Asia, particularly in Crete, Cyprus and Albania.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Arab standards were imported into Turkey from neighbouring countries, particularly from Iraq and Syria. Pure Arab maternal lines were preserved in various Turkish studs during the Ottoman Empire. The local Arab race receives the attention of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
A breed register was established for the breed under a law enacted in 1926, making it one of the two breeds of horses of Turkish origin to have such a register and national recognition.
Until 2005, horse filiation was established by blood typing, a technique replaced by DNA typing the following year. The foals are identified by the installation of an electronic chip.
Description
As a light model, the Turkish Arab horse tends to be larger than the other strains of so-called Arab horses, since it measures about . This particularity comes from his selection for local races. His cannon tower is on average. There are three listed lines: Kuhailan, Saklawi and Hamdani.
Uses
It is high preferentially for races, which represent an important economic sector in Turkey. Its speed is higher than that of other Arab horse lines. The Turkish Arab is allowed to cross among the races constituting the Touran horse.
Dissemination of livestock
The existence of registers allows a fairly reliable estimate of the presence of these horses in Turkey. In 2008, 250 breeding standards were listed in the country. The study conducted by the University of Uppsala in 2007 identifies him as a local Asian race whose level of threat is unknown. The Turkish Arab is born in three national studs: Ciftaler, Karacabey and Sultan Suyu, as well as in many private studs
