Turkish Culture
Culture of Turkey
Overview
Turkey's culture is a unique blend of various civilizations, traditions, and influences from its geographical location on two continents. The country's cultural practices are shaped by the Ottoman Empire, Islam, Turkish peoples originally from Asian steppes, as well as civilizations, peoples, and religions that preceded them in Anatolia, the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, and Europe.
Population
The history of Turkey makes it challenging to define a "Turkish type" due to its multinational past. At the turn of the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire was a vast state spanning three continents, resulting in a diverse population with various cultural influences. Today, modern Turkey has an ethnically Turkish majority, as well as small residual communities such as Laze, Armenian, and Greek minorities, alongside significant Kurdish and Arab populations.
Origins of Turkish Culture
Turkish culture originated from the cultural accumulation of Central Asia. From the time of the Seljuk Empire, it interacted with Eastern Mediterranean and Islamic cultures, eventually evolving into the modern Turkish culture.
Architecture
### Anatolian Architecture
Anatolia has a rich architectural heritage, which reflects the country's cultural diversity. The Anadolu Seljuk Caravanserai is an example of this blend, featuring Chinese, cloth, and embossing figures alongside Mosque and Saray architecture. Stone was the primary material used in construction, often employed in religious, civil, and commercial works. The art of stone clotheme, developed in the 13th century in Konya and Sivas cities, is a notable example.
### Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman Empire played a significant role in shaping Turkish culture, particularly in architecture. Early Period Ottoman Architecture saw the development of unique structures that blended Eastern and Western influences. The use of Chinese art procedures became widespread in palace and religious architecture during this period. Bozkır style animal figures were commonly used in mosque embossments, often featuring double-headed eagles and tigers.
