Turkish Presidential Elections 2023

The Turkish presidential election of 2023 was a presidential election held to determine the President of Turkey for the next five years. The first round took place on May 14, and since no candidate received more than 50% +1 of the votes, a second round was held on May 28. These elections were accompanied by parliamentary elections to choose members of parliament for the country's 25th parliament.

According to reports, there were 64,190,651 voters in total, with 60.9 million in Turkey and 3.2 million abroad.

As a result of these elections, incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was re-elected for a new five-year term until 2028. This is his second term as president under the country's new constitution, which changed the system of government from a parliamentary republic to a presidential one.

Background

2017 referendum and 2018 election

The previous Turkish general and presidential elections were held on June 24, 2018. The constitutional amendment referendum of 2017 was also discussed at that time, in which the new system (from a parliamentary to a presidential system) was adopted by politicians, media, and the public during the preparatory phase and during the election campaign. After the narrow approval of the constitutional amendments by voters in the 2017 referendum and considering the unsealed votes as valid by the Supreme Election Council, the outcome of the referendum was also discussed, and with the adoption of the constitutional amendment, it was decided to hold general elections on the same day as the presidential election. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been in office since 2014, was re-elected as president in the 2018 election.
