TRNC Directorate of Religious Affairs
The TRNC Directorate of Religious Affairs (Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti Din İşleri Başkanlığı) is an institution responsible for carrying out works related to faith, worship, and moral principles of Islam in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It also aims to enlighten society about religion and manage places of worship on the island.
History
The Directorate falls under the umbrella of the Directorate of Religious Affairs of Turkey. As a result, it follows the same guidelines and regulations as its counterpart in Turkey.
Structure and Services
The TRNC Directorate of Religious Affairs provides services in the five districts of the TRNC: Nicosia, Famagusta, Girne (Kyrenia), Güzelyurt, and İskele. Additionally, it also serves Lefke and the Republic of Cyprus.
As of 2021, the chairman is Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ünsal. The directorate has appointed and funded all 225 imams at the 210 Sunni mosques in the area. It also approves all sermons for Friday worship.
