Turks in Berlin
Turks in Berlin
Turks in Berlin form the largest ethnic minority group and the largest Turkish society outside Turkey. The majority of them reside in Kreuzberg, Neukölln, and Wedding, with significant populations also found in other areas, primarily those of the former West Berlin.
Demography
As of December 2016, there were 97,682 foreign citizens with Turkish citizenship registered as residents in Berlin. Additionally, there were 79,048 German citizens who had a Turkish "migration background", meaning they or their parents had immigrated to Germany after 1955. These figures include individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, such as Kurds and other minorities from Turkey.
It is worth noting that the German state does not collect statistics on racial groups, instead categorizing ethnic groups from Turkey as being of Turkish national origin. This classification also encompasses individuals from other countries with significant Turkish populations, including Bulgaria, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Iraq, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Romania, and others.
Statistics
The official statistics do not provide a comprehensive picture of the ethnic Turkish community in Berlin due to the way censuses collect data on country of birth rather than ethnicity. The numbers mentioned above only account for foreign nationals with Turkish citizenship and German citizens with a Turkish migration background, but do not include third, fourth, or fifth generation Turkish-Germans who are recorded as "Germans".
