The 1984 European Football Championship Qualifications Group 5
The 1984 European Football Championship Qualifications, also known as Euro 84, was a qualifying tournament for the 1984 European Football Championship. Among the seven groups competing in this qualification process, one of them stood out – Group 5. This group consisted of five teams: Romania, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Italy, and the Republic of Cyprus.
The double-circuit league system was applied to host and displace teams within the group. As a result, Sweden emerged as the first team from this group, having secured a crucial win in their opening match against Romania. This victory allowed them to secure a spot at the 1984 European Football Championship.
Group 5's final standings were dominated by Romania, who finished with an impressive point clear of second-placed Sweden. The Czechoslovakian and Italian teams trailed behind, while Cyprus secured a respectable finish in their inaugural Euro qualification campaign.
The group stage saw several notable performances from individual players. In the Republic of Cyprus' first-ever Euro qualification match, they managed to score one goal against Italy. This historic win marked an important milestone for Cypriot football.
In terms of team management, Vassil Spassov served as the Technical Director for the Republic of Cyprus, while František Havránek led the Czechoslovakian side. Enzo Bearzo was in charge of Italian affairs, with Mircea Lucescu overseeing Romanian operations. Lars Arnesson headed Sweden's football team.
