Overview

The 2016-17 UEFA Women's Champions League was the sixteenth edition of the European championship competition for women's football clubs. It was the eighth edition under this designation and featured a record 59 teams from 47 countries competing for the title.

Qualification

For the first time, a team from Kosovo participated in the qualification process. The top eleven UEFA-rated associations at the end of the 2015-16 season had their champion and vice-champion clubs qualified directly for the sixteenth finals. The twelfth association to the UEFA coefficient only had its champion club qualified directly for the 16th finals, while 36 other associations went through a qualifying phase to join the other teams.

Participants

A total of 59 clubs participated in the competition, including the champions and vice-champions of the 12 strongest nations and the national champions of the remaining UEFA members. The defending champion was Olympique Lyon, who were able to prevail in the final against Paris Saint-Germain and defend their title.

Competition Schedule

The competition began with the first matches of the qualifying round in August 2016 and ended with the final on June 1, 2017, held at Cardiff City Stadium in Wales.
