"UK at Junior Eurovision Song Contest"
- CONTENT--
The UK participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 4 times: from 2003 to 2005 with ITV. In 2006, the country refused to participate in the competition due to low ratings, returning only after a record 16 years: in 2022, but with another broadcaster - the BBC.
History
The UK was one of sixteen countries to debut at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2003, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 15 November 2003. Then the country was represented by Tom Morley with the song “My Song for the World” and took 3rd place, scoring 118 points. He was followed by Corey Spedding in 2004 with the song "The Best is Yet to Come", taking 2nd place with 140 points, and in 2005 - Johnny Fuller with the song "How Does It Feel?", taking 14th place with 28 points. In 2006, the country refused to participate in the competition due to low ratings.
The United Kingdom was also to host the 2004 Junior Eurovision Song Contest: in May 2003, the European Broadcasting Union selected ITV from the United Kingdom to host the competition. Shortly after the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2003, it was confirmed that the next edition would take place in Manchester on 20 November 2004. However, in May 2004, ITV refused to host the contest due to funding issues.
Participation by Wales
Welsh broadcaster S4C considered making its debut at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Limassol, Cyprus, on November 22, 2008. Wales never made its Eurovision Song Contest 2008 debut, presumably because Wales is not a sovereign state. In the end, Wales debuted at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018, at which the country was introduced by Manu with the song "Perta", who finished last (twentieth) with 29 points. Wales also continued their participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019, where Wales introduced Erin May with the song "Calon yn Curo (Heart Beating)", which came in 18th with 35 points. In 2020, Wales refused to participate in the competition and has not returned to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest to this day.
Participation of Scotland
On 29 June 2019, Scottish broadcaster BBC Alba said they would not make their debut at the 2019 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, but the broadcaster was interested in taking part in the 2020 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. However, as of 2023, Scotland has never made its Eurovision Junior Song Contest debut.
Return
The UK has repeatedly considered returning to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. At a press conference for Junior Eurovision 2021 on May 20, 2021, the European Broadcasting Union said they were working to bring the UK back to the 2021 contest. However, the final list of countries participating in the 2021 competition, published by the EBU on 2 September 2021, did not include the UK. After all, on 25 August 2022, it was announced that the UK would take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest for the first time since 2005, but with another broadcaster, the BBC.
