History

Ugarit-Verlag was founded on 13 July 1988 by Manfried Dietrich and Oswald Loretz as a civil law company for the publishing of scientific books. The series “Treatises on the Literature of Ancient Syria-Palestine (and Mesopotamia)” (ALASP(M)) started with the series “Ugaritic-Biblical Literature” (UBL) in the same year. In 1992, the series “Altertumskunde des Vorderen Orients” (AVO) was founded and, after the death of Alfred Rupp, the publications “Mitteilungen für Anthropologie und Religiongeschichte” (MARG) and “Forschungen zur Anthropologie und Religiongeschichte” (FARG) as well as the yearbook of the publishing house “Homo et Religio”, Saarbrücken, were taken over. In 1997, the editors withdrew the series “Alter Orient und Altes Testament” (AOAT) and the yearbook “Ugarit-Forschungen” (UF) from the publishers Butzon & Bercker and Neukirchener and integrated these publications into the Ugarit-Verlag’s offering. Due to the growing offer, it was necessary to hire a lector and other auxiliary staff.

On July 2, 2012, Ugarit-Verlag GbR was taken over by Thomas Richard Kämmerer and has since been continued together with Manfried Dietrich as Ugarit-Verlag – Buch- und Medienhandel GmbH. In 2015, the series Vienna Open Oriental Studies (WOO) was adopted and the series Karum – Emporion – Forum (KEF) and Archaeological Research of Sudan (ARS) 2016 / 2017 were newly founded. Since 2020 / 2021, Ugarit publishes the series Munich Egyptological Studies (MÄS) and the yearbook Journal of Global History of Civilizations (JGHC).
