Vesti (newspaper)

Vesti is a Ukrainian daily Russian-language newspaper.

History

The first issue of Vesti was published on May 14, 2013. The newspaper's creation was announced by Oleksandr Chalenko, a former columnist for the Ukrainian newspaper Segodnya, in February 2013. According to him, Igor Guzhva, the former editor-in-chief of Segodnya and Moskovskie Novosti (a Moscow-based newspaper), had returned to Ukraine from Moscow and was creating a new newspaper with Russian investors.

In April 2013, Ukrainian media reported that Viktor Medvedchuk was involved in the newspaper "Vesti". The staff of the newspaper "Today" were allegedly involved in Guzhva's new project.

Distribution

Initially, Vesti was distributed for free in major cities of Ukraine. However, as of January 2018, a nominal fee was introduced for distribution in these areas. In other regions, a paid subscription was available.

Circulation and Censorship

According to the newspaper itself, it has a daily circulation of 350,000 copies. The newspaper is largely free in large cities such as Kiev, Kharkiv, Odessa, Dnieper Rose, Mariupol, and Zaporizhzhia. However, in other parts of Ukraine, the newspaper is paid.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Vesti ceased to be published, and its website (Vesti.ua) was blocked in Russia.
