Tourism in Ukraine

Overview

Ukraine is a country with a developed tourism industry. According to the State Statistics Service, the number of foreign visitors has fluctuated over the years. In 2017, 14.2 million foreigners visited Ukraine, primarily from Russia, Moldova, Belarus, and neighboring countries of Eastern Europe, as well as the United States, Uzbekistan, and Israel.

Historical Trends

Prior to 2014, tourism in Ukraine was growing steadily. However, after the beginning of the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine in 2014, tourism sharply decreased by 93% according to state statistics. In 2015, only 12.4 million people visited Ukraine, including one-day visits, with a mere 15 thousand people visiting for tourist purposes.

Structure of Tourism

The majority of tourists visiting Ukraine come from countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). According to data, in 2008, 25 million foreign citizens visited Ukraine, with CIS countries accounting for 63% of all visitors. EU countries accounted for 33%, and other countries made up 4%.

The sphere of tourist interests in Ukraine includes both active recreation and sports tourism, as well as cultural and historical tourism. The country's rich archaeological and religious history, culture, and natural beauty make it an attractive destination for tourists.
