Ulisse Carlo Bascherini

Biography

Ulisse Carlo Bascherini was born on 2 April 1844 in Corvaia, a small hamlet near Seravezza, Tuscany. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Lucca and later studied in Pisa and Rome.

Ecclesiastical Career

Bascherini's ecclesiastical career began as a chaplain and spiritual economist in Barga. He was then appointed canon of the Cathedral of Pisa, and later archpriest and vicar general of the Pisan archdiocese. On 8 July 1907, he was elected Bishop of Grosseto by Pope Pius X and consecrated on 17 August of the same year by Cardinal Pietro Maffi in the Cathedral of Pisa.

During his tenure as bishop, Bascherini began the construction of the summer office of the episcopal seminary near Roccatederighi, which was completed in 1912. He also served as apostolic administrator of the Tuscan parishes of the Abbey of the Three Fountains during World War I.

Later Life and Resignation

In an attempt to prevent the requisition of the bishopric building of Via Mazzini by the Italian State, Bascherini tried but ultimately failed. On 8 March 1920, at the age of seventy-five, he resigned from the bishopric, leaving the post to Monsignor Gustavo Matteoni.

Later Life and Death

After his resignation, Bascherini was appointed titular bishop of Amathus in Cyprus by Pope Benedict XV. He died on 16 May 1933.
