Ulysses (ship, 2001)

--- CONTENT ---
The Ulysses is a car ferry operated by Irish Ferries between Dublin (Ireland) and Holyhead (Wales) in the Irish Sea. Her maiden voyage took place on 15 March 2001. With a capacity of up to 1,342 passengers, it is one of the largest ferries in the world in terms of vehicle capacity. It is named after the novel Ulysses by James Joyce.

History
The Ulysses was ordered from Aker Finnyards in July 1999. On 1 September 2000 the ship was docked at the shipyard in Rauma, Finland. On 28 February 2001 it was delivered to Irish Ferries and entered service under the Irish flag with its home port Dublin. It was baptized on March 21, 2001. On 25 March 2001, the ship was commissioned on the route Dublin – Holyhead.

Since January 2006, the ship has sailed under the Cypriot flag with its home port Limassol.

Data
With a length of 209 meters, a width of 31.84 meters and a draught of 6.4 meters, it is measured with 50.938 GT and has a displacement of 27.425 tons. The normal service speed is 22 nodes.

Capacity
The up to 1,900 passengers are spread over twelve decks, four of which are used for vehicle transport with a total railway length of 4,076 m. The car decks with either 240 trucks or 1,342 cars can be loaded and unloaded in 90 minutes. Due to the short crossing time of only 195 minutes, there are only 117 passenger cabins with 228 sleeping places, but there are plenty of bars, pubs, restaurants, including one of the fast food chain Burger King, shops and a casino.

Propulsion
The Ulysses is driven by four paired MaK-M43 nine-cylinder diesel engines with a power output of 7,800 kW each, which transfer their power to two variable-pitch propellers with a diameter of 5.1 meters each, which rotate at 144.4/min. The four thrusters (three at the front, one at the rear) with a propeller diameter of 2.75 m are electrically driven. The two rudders at the rear have an area of 16.4 m2 each. For the energy supply, three more diesel engines with 1,520 kW each, four shaft generators with 3,100 kW each, as well as a Cummins diesel emergency generator are available.
