Unilever
Unilever
Overview
Unilever is a Dutch-British multinational consumer goods company based in Rotterdam and London. The group is present in food, hygiene, and home products, controlling many well-known brands.
History
### Founding
Unilever was founded in September 1929 by the merger of two companies: the British Lever Brothers and the Dutch Margarine Unie (families Jurgens and van den Bergh). The merger was undertaken to benefit from the shared use of lard necessary for the manufacture of margarine as well as soap, which could be imported in larger quantities.
### Expansion
The name "Unilever" comes from the contraction of both entities: Margarine Unie + Brothers, with "Uni" pronounced in Dutch and "Lever" pronounced in English. Over the years, the company has experienced a significant rise and expansion, becoming one of the most powerful multinationals on the market.
Operations
Unilever is present in 90 countries with over 200 branches. The company employs approximately 127,000 employees (as of 2022) and has a turnover of €60 billion euros for that year. In terms of sales volume, Unilever was the fourth-largest player in the world's agri-food market in 2010, behind Nestlé, PepsiCo, and Coca-Cola Company.
Brands
Unilever controls over 400 brands among the most popular in the field of food, beverages, hygiene, and home products. The company is also a leader in the ice cream industry, with an estimated annual turnover of around €50 billion euros and presence in over 40 countries.
