United Democratic Youth Organization (EDON)

Overview

The United Democratic Youth Organization (Greek: Ενιαία Δημοκρατική Οργάνωση Νεολαίας), commonly referred to by its transliterated initials EDON, is a Communist political organization in Cyprus. It is the youth wing of the Progressive Party of Working People (transliterated initials AKEL), a communist party.

History

EDON was founded on 12 April 1959. It is an integral part of the Left movement in Cyprus and maintains close relations with it.

Ideology and Principles

According to its statutory principles, EDON is engaged by the ideals of socialism, peace, democracy, social progress, social justice and equality, humanism, and internationalism. The organization seeks a Cyprus that is independent, federal, and demilitarized.

Structure and Activities

EDON operates four departments:

* Department of young workers
* Student department (where it is the student organization Progressive Student Movement)
* PHOM department
* General department of EDON

EDON is also a member of the World Federation of Democratic Youths (PODN), which was founded in 1945.

Politics and Positions

The organization supports a federal solution to the Cyprus question. It fights against colonialism, freedom, and democracy. EDON maintains close relations with the Left movement in Cyprus and AKEL.
