United Nations Iraq–Kuwait Observation Mission
The United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM)
The United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) was established on April 9, 1991, following the Gulf War by Security Council Resolution 689 (1991), and fully deployed by early May 1991. This mission aimed to monitor the demilitarized zone along the border between Iraq and Kuwait, report any aggressive actions, and deter border violations.
The initial mandate of UNIKOM was to oversee a joint military observation force tasked with monitoring the DMZ along the Iraq-Cuba border and the Khawr 'Abd Allah waterway. However, as tensions escalated in 1993, the mission's mandate was expanded under Security Council Resolution 806 on February 5, 1993, to include physical measures aimed at preventing violations.
The force reached its maximum strength of 1,187 personnel on February 28, 1995, with a headquarters located within the demilitarized zone in Am Qasr, Iraq. The contributing countries included nearly two dozen nations from around the world, including Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia (the Soviet Union before December 24, 1991), Senegal, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
During its operational phase, UNIKOM included a security company composed of multinational personnel from Austria, Denmark, Fiji, Ghana, and Nepal. Additionally, five infantry companies were derived from the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, providing further support to the mission's efforts.
The force faced significant challenges during its tenure, including border disputes and security threats. Despite these obstacles, UNIKOM played a crucial role in maintaining stability along the Iraq-Kuwait border until its withdrawal on October 6, 2003. At that time, there were four military observers and 131 civilian staff members remaining, with a total of 18 fatalities during the mission's duration.
