United Nations Security Council Resolution 1218

Background

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1218 was adopted unanimously on December 22, 1998.

Reaffirmation of Previous Resolutions

The resolution reaffirmed all previous resolutions related to the situation in Cyprus, including those that addressed the peace process surrounding the Cyprus dispute.

Peace Process and Cooperation

The Security Council expressed its concern at the lack of progress towards a comprehensive political settlement in Cyprus. It supported Secretary-General Kofi Annan's initiative to reduce tensions and promote progress on the island between the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus, praising both sides for their constructive efforts.

Initiatives by the Secretary-General

The resolution urged the Secretary-General to continue his efforts with due regard for Resolution 1178 (1998) and to work intensively on several key issues:

* Refraining from threats or use of violence
* Reducing foreign military presence on the island
* Implementing proposals made by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus to reduce tensions along the buffer zone

Reduction of Tensions

The resolution also called for a reduction in voltage (or tension) on the island, as mentioned in Decision No. 1218 of the United Nations Security Council.

Adoption

The decision was accepted with the adoption of all countries on December 22, 1998.
